Farnborough International 2008 saw deals worth around £44bn struck during the event for some 480 aircraft and equipment systems.

This figure doubled the previous 2006 record.  The 60th edition of the legendary event attracted some 132,636 business visitors and 153,000 public visitors on the final weekend, an increase of 23,000 on 2006.

Despite clear indications of a slowdown in the global airline industry, Farnborough International 2008 saw deals worth around £44bn struck during the event for some 480 aircraft and equipment systems.

The world's largest temporary exhibition also sold 110,491 square metres of space, a 7% increase on 2006, and  enjoyed representation from 40 countries, featuring 29 international and regional pavilions.

Other statistical highlights include 70 delegations from 38 countries, which visited 151 companies, resulting in a total of 603 company meetings.

What’s more, International Youth Day attracted 455 14 to 16-year-olds and 175 17to 20-year-olds and Farnborough Airshow 2008 showcased a total of 165 aircraft either on static or in the daily flying display.

Major new orders placed by airlines and leading companies include: AeroMexico, AirBlue, Alis Aerolinee Italiane, Arik Air, Asiana, Avialeasing, Aviation Capital Group, Bristow Helicopters, British Airways, Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, Etihad, FlyDubai, Malaysian Airlines, Porter Airlines, Qatar Airways, Saudi Arabian Airlines, Shanghai Airlines, Shenzen Airlines, Tunisair and Wizz Air.

"There is no doubt that Farnborough 2008 has been an outstanding success,” said Trevor Sidebottom, managing director of Farnborough International Ltd. “We are delighted that Farnborough has witnessed the announcement of many significant orders, in addition to key programme launches and many show highlights.

"Although the airline industry continues to operate against a background of slowing economies and high fuel prices, it is clear that both manufacturers and airline carriers are in fact expanding their fleets and routes, based on market demand.  The volume of orders placed during last week clearly demonstrates that Farnborough Airshow is still the leading business forum for aerospace professionals from around the world."
