Organise This, an event management company based in Manchester, has won a high-level award for environmental business heroes in the North West region for its online tool designed to guide companies through the BS8901 sustainable events standard.

The yearly North West Business Environment Awards are supported by the Northwest Regional Development Agency and the Mersey Basin Campaign, and are designed to celebrate innovation and environmental leadership within the regions businesses.

The sustainable events online tool took runner-up in the Sustainable Procurement Category at the awards. This tool provides an online aide to event managers and venues to help them run in a more sustainable manner both in the organising and running of events of all kinds. It provides a step-by-step guide to all areas of the event, before, during and after, and enables stakeholders to be involved within the process. The tool itself provides an eight-step process, including an in-built carbon footprint calculator and pointers to free environmental advice and tips.

The online tool was created by Organise This and Crowberry Consulting, an environmental consultancy based at the Lancaster Environment Centre. www.eventsustainability.co.uk is currently the only online tool available to the events industry to guide them through the new British Standard BS 8901 for Sustainable Event Management. Since launching in 2007, it has been embraced by the events industry, with major London venues Earls Court, Olympia and the Barbican using it to full force with their own events.
